Literature Review

I am nearly done with my first draft of my literature review, and I could not be happier. The literature reviews of high school and college history papers cannot be compared to a literature review for an undergraduate thesis. I will not be surprised if my literature review is the longest section of my entire project, honestly, I do not think I will mind if it is; I put a lot of effort into writing it.

Getting Started

I'm geared up to work already!

Hello World! My name is Danielle Greene, and I officially welcome you to my Honors Thesis blog! I am a rising senior at The College of William & Mary (class of 2012!!!), and am originally from Glen Allen, Virginia. Despite double majoring in English and History, you will find that my honors thesis will officially be produced from the department of Interdisciplinary Studies, as my subject matter is in the realm of Education.

The reason behind my interest in education comes from the fact that I was born to a Sales Manager and an Educator, but never took to numbers, business, or finance. Instead, I spent the majority of my youth in classrooms following my mother around, and building an enthusiasm for discovering how children are taught. However, the more I learned about the education system, the more I was confronted with the severity of educational inequalities.

Instead of continuing on with a rather long explanation of my background, I will sum it up with the following statement: there are some people out there who want to save the entire world; I, on the other hand, am happy with positively altering the lives of children who go through America’s public school systems. I realize that this STILL is a very large feat, but I have found my starting point with my thesis, “Tracking & the Opportunity Gap.” My hope is that my thesis will follow and create an understanding of the educational experiences of a group of students from a particular school system. The purpose of understanding the educational experiences of the students is to help determine what different factors play the largest role in the successes or failures of students in that specific public school system.

As this is the end of May, I am still in the beginning stages of writing and researching; specifically I am digging into my Literature Review. However, I would like to invite you to check back as I will consistently provide updates regarding my project’s progress as it evolves throughout the summer.

Before ending I would like to give a very LARGE and heartfelt thank you to all of the people who have helped to support my thesis thus far, as your encouragement is and will definitely be a key motivator for my success.
